Three more interviews, and still Jace didn\u2019t see something in the folders\u2014or the applicants\u2014he thought might fit at Horseshoe Home Ranch. Finally, only one folder remained on his desk. He didn\u2019t bother to open it. All the designers had brought a copy of their designs for the different spaces on the ranch.<\/p>\n

Landon opened the door and said, \u201cMiss Belle.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jace snapped his head up, ice sinking through his chest, coating his lungs and internal organs in stiff blocks he\u2019d never escape. Why hadn\u2019t\u2014?<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, look at you.\u201d Belle strode forward, her luxurious auburn hair flowing behind her like a curtain. She\u2019d pinned back only the very front, leaving the rest to frame her high cheekbones, her bright green eyes, and her very glossed lips.<\/p>\n

Jace yanked his attention away from those lips, which had always intrigued him. \u201cLook at me?\u201d he asked, making a conscious effort not to reach up and smooth down his beard like he did when he wanted to look his best. \u201cLook at you. What happened? Did Sacramento run out of red lipstick? You had to come all the way to Gold Valley to get stocked up?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHa ha.\u201d She swept him from head to toe. \u201cI see you\u2019re still wearing that ridiculous hat.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone wears these hats,\u201d he shot back. \u201cWe\u2019re cowboys.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, well, most decent men buy a replacement every few years.\u201d She sniffed as she perched on the edge of the chair across from his desk and pulled a folder from her purse. No briefcase bag. No pretentious heels\u2014Belle didn\u2019t need them. She stood almost as tall as her brother, Landon.<\/p>\n

The snake, Jace thought as he rounded the desk and took his seat. Landon should\u2019ve told him his sister had applied. Growing up, Jace had never seen eye-to-eye with the redhead, though he did enjoy trading jabs with her when she visited from her hoity-toity job at a design firm in Sacramento.<\/p>\n

Instead of focusing on her tight black jeans and flowing top of cobalt blue\u2014which he thought made her hair look positively decadent\u2014he flipped open the folder to check her address. \u201cYou moved back?\u201d<\/p>\n

She shrugged one shoulder, the silky blouse she wore slipping a little. \u201cMy parents are on a six-month service mission in Africa. I\u2019m taking care of the house.\u201d<\/p>\n

He returned his gaze to the folder, which was safer than drinking in Belle\u2019s curves. \u201cMm hm.\u201d He\u2019d heard that before. Pretty princess left home, and instead of admitting that the world had chewed her up, she came home \u201cto take care of the house.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou must be tired.\u201d Her tone, which someone less experienced than Jace could\u2019ve misinterpreted to be sympathetic, caused him to abandon the folder.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy do you say that?\u201d Jace knew Belle\u2019s body didn\u2019t actually house sympathetic bones, even though she dressed it up nice and sprayed intoxicating, lilac-scented perfume across her collarbone. His gaze dropped to that spot, and her golden skin made his blood run a little faster.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t even make a joke about me taking care of the house.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jace opened his mouth to say something, but closed it when nothing came to mind. \u201cIt\u2019s been a long day. Let\u2019s get this over with.\u201d With effort, he closed her folder and shoved his traitorous thoughts about Belle\u2019s attractiveness to the back of his mind. \u201cDid you bring your portfolio?\u201d<\/p>\n
